Een congres over de uitdaging van eindige hulpbronnen voor een groene economie.

Wat de groenen al jaren benadrukken, bereikt nu ook de economische hoofdkwartieren: de aarde is eindig. Terwijl de vraag naar grondstoffen blijft stijgen, zal het aanbod juist afnemen vanwege fysieke en geopolitieke omstandigheden. Het overkomen van deze schaarste aan grondstoffen is een enorme uitdaging die een radicale verandering van het huidige socio-economische paradigma vereist. De introductie van het gesloten kringloop-principe, eco-design, sociale innovatie en lokale economieën die gebaseerd zijn op reparatie en recycling zijn voorbeelden van hoe deze verandering plaats zou kunnen vinden.

De eerste helft van het congres schetst de Europese context, in de tweede helft bekijken we praktische voorbeelden van sociale innovatie en de Vlaamse situatie. Sprekers zijn onder andere Reinhard Bütikofer, Europees parlementslid voor de Duitse groenen en rapporteur over grondstoffenschaarste, Ariadna Rodrigo, Resource Use Campaigner voor Friends of the Earth Europe, en Peter Tom Jones, burgerlijk ingenieur werkzaam voor de K.U. Leuven en pionier van Plan C, de Vlaamse transitie-arena voor duurzaam materialenbeheer.

Congress Running on empty: EARTH Ltd. Ideas for a new green economy

A conference on the challenge of finite resources for greening the economy

What used to be part of the green discourse has become a generally accepted fact: the earth is finite. While global demand for natural resources is expected to continue to rise, the offer will decline due to physical and geopolitical conditions. Affronting this scarcity of resources presents a great challenge that will require a radical overhaul of the current socio-economic paradigm. The introduction of the closed loop principle, eco-design, social innovation and local economies based on repair and recycling are some examples of how this change might take place.

The morning part of the conference will focus primarily on the European angle. In the afternoon we will look at innovative solutions and see what this means for the Flemish region. Speakers include Reinhard Bütikofer, MEP for the German greens and rapporteur on finite resources, Ariadna Rodrigo, Resource Use Campaigner for Friends of the Earth Europe, and Peter Tom Jones, civil engineer attached to the University of Leuven and pioneer of a Flemish transition programme for sustainable use of materials.
